Jonathan Joseph is in danger of missing the whole of Bath Rugby's European Rugby Champions Cup pool campaign.

The 24-year-old England centre ruptured a pectoral muscle during the World Cup and has undergone surgery. He is not expected to return until late January.

It means Bath will kick-off their Champions Cup campaign at the home of the holders RC Toulon without their England midfield to face the likes of Matt Giteau, Mathieu Bastareaud or potentially new signings Ma’a Nonu and Duane Vermeulen.

Joseph will also miss the Pool 5 clashes against Leinster Rugby and the back-to-back games against rivals Wasps. Last season’s Aviva Premiership beaten finalists face Leinster and RC Toulon in January.

“Bath Rugby can confirm that centre Jonathan Joseph underwent surgery earlier this week for a pectoral injury sustained during the Rugby World Cup. Joseph, who made his 16th international appearance for England during the competition, will be out of action for approximately three months,” said a club statement.

The loss of Joseph could also open the door for England teammate Sam Burgess to play in the midfield, where he has won all his Test caps, rather than his club position of flanker. Bath also have England caps Matt Banahan and Kyle Eastmond to call on to play at centre.
