With England attempting to win a second Rugby World Cup this weekend when they take on South Africa, we take a look back at four players to have won both the European Cup and the World Cup. Ben Cohen – 2000 The former Northampton Saints, Brive and Sale Sharks wing enjoyed a 13-year career in European rugby, playing 70 times across the European Cup and the Challenge Cup, scoring 35 tries. His greatest hour would come with Northampton in the 2000 European Cup final, when the 21-year-old helped the English side defeat Munster Rugby 9-8 at Twickenham in a nail-biting decider. Cohen would start on the wing in the 2003 World Cup final, playing the entire match before going on to make a total of 57 appearances for his country. Martin Johnson – 2001 & 2002 England’s talismanic captain and lock Martin Johnson lifted the Webb Ellis Cup in 2003 but tasted European Cup success in the two previous years with Leicester Tigers. Having been beaten in the 1997 final, Leicester would avenge that defeat four years later when seeing off Stade Français Paris 34-30 in one of the all-time great European Cup finals before backing that up a year later with a 15-9 victory over Munster in Cardiff. Johnson would end his playing career with 51 appearances for Leicester in the European Cup in addition to his 84 caps and two tries for England between 1993 and 2003. Jonny Wilkinson – 2013 & 2014 England’s drop goal hero in 2003, it would be another decade before fly-half Jonny Wilkinson would get his hands on the biggest prize in European rugby. His maiden success in the European Cup came in 2013 for the former Newcastle Falcons No.10, when he would kick 11 points as RC Toulon narrowly edged out ASM Clermont Auvergne 16-15 in Dublin. The French side would repeat the trick in 2014, this time comfortably dispatching Saracens 23-6 Cardiff with Wilkinson converting all five of his kicking opportunities, racking up a total of 13 points. Lawrence Dallaglio – 2004 & 2007 Former Wasps and England No.8 Lawrence Dallaglio was quick to taste European success after his victory on the international stage, lifting the European Cup in 2004 with Wasps. The English side secured victory over Toulouse in their first European Cup final with Rob Howley scoring a 79th minute try at Twickenham before repeating the trick three years later with a convincing 25-9 win over Leicester Tigers at the same stadium. Dallaglio also won the Challenge Cup in 2003, beating Bath Rugby 48-30 in a thrilling final at the Madejski Stadium.
