Today the Challenge Cup playmakers take centre stage in our ones to watch and our choice is a truly multinational line-up! Pool 1: Duncan Weir (Worcester Warriors) The Scottish international played in only two Challenge Cup games last season, but he was man of the match in one of them for his 13 points in the Round 4 win over Pau that helped Worcester reach the quarter-finals. If the 28-year-old receives more game time next season, he should make a crucial difference to the Warriors’ chances of progressing further with his astute game management and pinpoint kicking from hand and tee. Pool 2: Anthony Belleau (RC Toulon) Belleau is only 23, but the multitalented No.10 has already made a name for himself, playing 12 Tests for France and scoring 24 points. It did not take him long to shine on the European stage either, racking up 68 points in the last two seasons in the Champions Cup, and so he will surely enjoy himself in the Challenge Cup. [jwplayer up8eyOUH] Pool 3: Jaco van der Walt (Edinburgh Rugby) The South African-born fly-half was a key reason behind Edinburgh qualifying for the quarter-finals of the Heineken Champions Cup last season for the first time since 2012. His nerveless goalkicking allied to his intelligent playmaking saw him amass 70 points in seven games to finish second in the competition’s scoring list and he will no doubt be looking to go at least one better in the Challenge Cup next season. Pool 4: Carlo Canna (Zebre Rugby Club) Zebre had one of their better seasons last term and that was in no small measure to the efforts of the 27-year-old Canna, who clocked up 59 points in six games. The goalkicking Italy fly-half has played four successive seasons in the Challenge Cup and each campaign his tally has improved, with last term bringing four tries as well – his first in the competition. Pool 5: Jarrod Evans (Cardiff Blues) Evans was a big factor in Cardiff winning the Challenge Cup the last time they entered the competition, in 2017/18, when they pipped Gloucester Rugby 31-30 in a thrilling Bilbao final. The 23-year-old kicked two conversions and three penalties to round off an outstanding campaign in which he contributed 56 points to the Blues’ Challenge Cup success. He has since won his first Wales cap.
