The European Rugby Challenge Cup will boast some big names in 2018/19 via a combination of summer signings and different teams from last season taking part. Here we pick out one player per Pool to keep an eye out for. Pool 1: Morgan Parra (ASM Clermont Auvergne) The 29-year-old goal-kicking scrum-half may have played only 10 Challenge Cup ties in 12 seasons, but he has huge experience of the European Cup, having made 69 appearances and scored 477 points in that time for Bourgoin and ASM Clermont Auvergne. The 69-cap French international has also reached the Champions Cup final three times with ASM Clermont Auvergne in the last five years – in 2013, 2015 and 2017 – so is likely to be a key figure for the TOP 14 team as they aim for a third Challenge Cup. Pool 2: George North (Ospreys) North, 26, already possesses a Challenge Cup-winners' medal, having lifted the trophy with Northampton Saints in 2014 following their 30-16 victory over Bath Rugby in the all-English final. After leaving Franklin's Gardens for the Ospreys on a national dual contract, the Welsh region will now be hoping the double British and Irish Lion can spearhead their bid for a first European trophy via his trademark surges from the wing or centre. https://twitter.com/ospreys/status/989134226489532416 Pool 3: Chris Ashton (Sale Sharks) Like Parra, Ashton has made his name on the European stage in the European Cup, amassing 39 tries in only 62 games for Northampton Saints, Saracens and RC Toulon to head the try-scoring list for that competition. However, the 31-year-old former England wing boasted an even better average in his only Challenge Cup campaign, grabbing seven tries for Northampton in just six matches in 2008/09, and can be expected to add to that tally for his new club, whom he joined in the summer. Pool 4: Charles Piutau (Bristol Bears) Bristol Bears have played only one season in Europe since 2009, but their signing of former New Zealand utility back Piutau from Ulster Rugby shows they mean business this season. The 26-year-old Aucklander has already dazzled European audiences with his elusive running for Wasps and Ulster Rugby, scoring eight tries in 19 Champions Cup appearances and making many others. Pool 5: Gaëtan Germain (Grenoble) Like Bristol, Grenoble are returning to the Challenge Cup after a one-season absence and they have prepared for it with the shrewd signing of goal-kicking full-back Germain from TOP 14 rivals Brive. After two seasons in the European Cup with Racing 92, in which he chalked up 39 points, the 28-year-old has taken a liking to the Challenge Cup with 82 points in the last two campaigns.
