Blackett’s men were edged out 20-18 as Lyon reached their first European final, but he felt they were in charge for much of the game.

Jimmy Gopperth’s late try and conversion gave Wasps’ hope, but they could not snatch victory in the dying moments.

Blackett was quoted by the Coventry Telegraph: "We’re pretty gutted. There was a feeling out there that we controlled large parts of the game.

“It came down to big moments. On reflection, what would have won is the game is better conversion rates in the 22.

"We controlled the field position, but we didn’t take our opportunities. You look at the amount of times we got into the 22 and they got into the 22.

“The second thing is that we didn’t win the aerial game, we didn't win the air. They were the two things."

Although disappointed, Blackett had no complaints about his players’ work rate.

"We’re all proud but we want to win things," he said. "Walking away from this, I thought the effort was outstanding.

"We've come to a difficult place, to a team that are playing really well this year and controlled large parts of the game, so there's a frustration with that.

“In terms of us heading in the direction, coming to big European teams, there’s plenty to be positive but the game came down to a couple of moments and we lost those moments."
