2009-10: Champions

Cardiff became the first Welsh club to land a European trophy when they beat RC Toulon 28-21 in the final at Stade Vélodrome, Marseille.

A new format meant Cardiff joined the competition at the knockout stage, after coming down from the Heineken Cup, as it was then known.

They scored seven tries to hammer Newcastle Falcons 55-20 in their quarter-final at Kingston Park, before edging past Wasps 18-15 in the semi-finals, having trailed 12-8 at half-time.

In the final, a try from Sonny Bill Williams helped Toulon to a 13-6 lead at half-time, but Jamie Roberts, Leigh Halfpenny and Bradley Davies all crossed after the interval.

Toulon lost Jonny Wilkinson to injury, but Thomas Sourice's late try ensured a tense finale and Cardiff held on.

2014-15: Quarter-finalists

Cardiff enjoyed a strong campaign in Pool 1, winning five of their six matches to finish second to London Irish on head-to-head results.

They were then squeezed out 25-21 by Welsh rivals Dragons in a tense quarter-final, despite Josh Navidi’s late try.

2016-17: Quarter-finalists

Cardiff finished second to Bath Rugby in Pool 4 after again collecting five wins from their six matches.

In the last eight, Cardiff fell to a 46-26 defeat to Gloucester Rugby at Kingsholm, despite a try brace from Alex Cuthbert.

2017-18: Champions

A year later, Cardiff bagged their second victory in the competition, this time pipping Gloucester Rugby 31-30 in a dramatic final at San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao.

They had earlier topped Pool 2 ahead of Stade Toulousain with a record of five wins from six matches.

In the quarter-finals, they earned an impressive 20-6 victory over Edinburgh Rugby at Murrayfield as Ellis Jenkins and Blaine Scully scored tries.

With home advantage at Cardiff Arms Park, they defeated Section Paloise 16-10 in the semi-finals, where Jarrod Evans’ late penalty sealed an absorbing tie.

In the final, Cardiff trailed Gloucester 20-6 at half-time, but they clawed their way back, although Gloucester still led 30-23 with five minutes to go. However, Blaine Scully’s late try and Gareth Anscombe’s even later penalty sealed a pulsating triumph for Cardiff.
