Edinburgh Gunners recorded a special victory over London Wasps in the opening round of the Heineken Cup at Murrayfield.

In a pulsating match in which the lead switched back and back again, it was the home side who emerged victorious as the final whistle blew.

Replacement Simon Webster scored the decisive try as the clock ticked into injury time, sending the Gunners into a one-point lead, but they then had to hold on for dear life after Chris Paterson scuffed what seemed like a straightforward conversion in front of the posts.

Wasps fullback Mark Van Gisbergen scored penalties after seven and 11 minutes, with Gunners outside-half Paterson slotting a penalty after ten minutes.
The visitors pulled further ahead when flanker Jonny O'Conner scored the opening try of the match after 16 minutes, converted by Van Gisbergen.

But Edinburgh refused to lie down, and their pressure paid off when Paterson notched two penalties in quick succession.

England wing Josh Lewsey restored the Wasps lead, only for Hugo Southwell to muscle his way over the line to make the half time score 13-20 to keep the home side in the match.

The second half saw the momentum swing back and forth, with Wasps looking favourites to win the match, until Webster's last minute moment of magic. The wing received the ball 35 metres out, and cut inside a flailing Lewsey to sprint the final fifteen metres to the line unopposed.

London Wasps will rue the defeat, and in a Pool that has the current Heineken champions Toulouse, and the awkward Scarlets, their hopes of making a quarter-final spot have taken a huge dent.

Edinburgh are in a rich vein of form, having won 10 of their last 11 matches at Murrayfield, and this win will have given them the confidence to emulate their quarter-final reaching performance of two seasons ago.
