2007 Heineken Cup final: Leicester Tigers 9 Wasps 25

Wasps secured their second Heineken Cup title in four years as they defeated fellow English outfit Leicester Tigers 25-9 at Twickenham Stadium on May 20, 2007 – both their triumphs in EPCR’s premier competition coming in the English capital.

Fly-half Alex King got the scoring underway as he notched a fourth minute penalty – the first of four successful kicks from the tee. Leicester responded as opposing fly-half Andy Goode goaled a penalty with seven minutes played.

Wasps’ Irish scrum-half Eoin Reddan was the first of two players to notch tries in the contest with 13 minutes on the clock. A well worked short lineout just outside the Leicester 22 allowed Reddan to scamper through untouched to dot down in the corner.

Goode responded within two minutes as he notched his second penalty of the contest. However, Wasps extended their lead with a second try from French hooker Raphaël Ibañez. It was almost a carbon copy of the first try as Ibañez found Simon Shaw with another short lineout before the flanker returned the ball to the hooker to dot down in the corner.

Goode added a third penalty before the interval as Wasps led 13-9 in a finely poised final in front of a crowd of 81.076 at the English National Stadium – a tournament record at the time.

The pace dropped slightly in the second half as Wasps turned the screw on their domestic rival. King was the star of second period as he kicked a trio of further penalties, and added a drop goal for good measure, as the London outfit clinched the title for a second time.

The 2007 Heineken Cup win remains Wasps’ last success in EPCR’s premier competition, while Leicester returned to the final two years later in a 19-16 defeat to Leinster Rugby at Murrayfield.
