1998/99 Quarter-final: Ulster Rugby 15 Stade Toulousain 13

Inaugural tournament winners Toulouse were one of Ulster’s victims en route to their sole title success in 1999, with the Irish province registering a stirring home victory to book their place in the Heineken Cup semi-finals for the first time.

With the clubs’ third meeting of the campaign played out in front of a packed, 11,500 crowd after a win apiece in the pool stage, Ulster surged into a 9-0 half-time lead and then had to withstand a strong Toulouse response before holding out for a famous success.

For Ulster, Simon Mason landed three penalties and David Humphreys kicked two drop-goals, while Toulouse scored the game’s only try through Fabien Pelous, which was converted by Stephane Ougier. Yann Delaigue added two penalties for the visitors.

2019/20 Quarter-final: Stade Toulousain 36 Ulster Rugby 8

The clubs didn’t meet again in the knockout stage until 2020 and it was a very different result at Stade Ernest Wallon, where two first-half tries from Toulouse wing Cheslin Kolbe helped the French side to a dominant victory.

The South African international was at his brilliant best in the first period, before further tries in the second half from Antoine Dupont, Pita Ahki and Thomas Ramos ensured Toulouse’s spot in the last four of EPCR’s elite club competition.

Ramos also kicked four conversions and a penalty for a match tally of 16 points – double Ulster’s total which all came from John Cooney, who landed a first-half penalty and scored a second-half try.

2021/22 Round of 16 1st leg: Stade Toulousain 20 Ulster Rugby 26

Robert Baloucoune notched a hat-trick of tries to put Ulster in the driving seat for a place in the Heineken Champions Cup quarter-finals as they claimed a famous away win over the defending champions at Le Stadium.

Toulouse played 70 minutes with 14 men after Juan Cruz Mallia's red card for taking out Ben Moxham in the air, yet still turned round 13-7 ahead, with Thomas Ramos kicking two penalties after Baloucoune had cancelled out Emmanuel Meafou's early try.

However, Ulster made their extra man tell after the break, Baloucoune scoring two more tries and Andy Warwick one with John Cooney taking his conversion tally to three, before Romain Ntamack's late score and Ramos’ second conversion cut the deficit for the second leg to just six points.

2021/22 Round of 16 2nd leg: Ulster Rugby 23 Stade Toulousain 30

Toulouse reached the Heineken Champions Cup quarter-finals in thrilling style at the Kingspan Stadium, where a late Antoine Dupont try converted by Thomas Ramos saw them pip Ulster 50-49 on aggregate.

The Irish province led for much of the game against the reigning champions thanks to Ethan McIlroy’s try double, with John Cooney’s 13 points from his right boot putting them within sight of the last eight.

However, tries from Ramos and Romain Ntamack kept Toulouse in touch, before Tom O’Toole was sent off for Ulster and Dupont capitalised on 75 minutes. Ramos added the conversion to take his match tally to 20 points and send his side into the next round.
