Harlequins edged a thrilling all-Heineken Champions Cup clash with Northampton Saints 35-29 at Twickenham Stoop in a nine-try Gallagher Premiership bonanza on Sunday.
Two tries from Jack Musk plus one apiece from Lennox Anyanwu, Luke Northmore and Cadan Murley helped the Pool A side to victory against their Pool B rivals, who replied with scores from Lewis Ludlam, Tommy Freeman, George Furbank and Tom James.
Quins made a blistering start to go 14-0 up by the seventh minute, with Musk’s first try preceding Anyanwu’s effort and Marcus Smith kicking the first two of his five conversions.
Northampton responded with a Lewis Ludlam score converted by Dan Biggar, who also landed a penalty, only for Northmore to cross for another improved first-half try to ensure a 21-10 interval lead for the hosts.
Quins then surged further ahead with Musk’s second converted try and although Northampton responded through Freeman, Cadan Murley’s improved 63rd minute score sealed victory, Furbank’s and James’ late tries proving insufficient.
In the TOP 14, Montpellier Hérault Rugby succumbed 19-17 at home to fellow Pool B side Stade Toulousain in another all-Heineken Champions Cup encounter.
Montpellier may have scored two tries through Anthony Bouthier and Enzo Forletta to Toulouse’s one via Dimitri Delibes, but Melvyn Jaminet’s goal-kicking proved crucial as he kicked four penalties and a conversion for the visitors.
