Amid the landmark expansion of EPCR tournaments to include South African sides for the first time in 2022/23, we are looking at players from that country already with EPCR Challenge Cup clubs. Today, we profile two from Aviron Bayonnais.

Pieter Scholtz

The 28-year-old prop joined the TOP 14 team for the new season on a one-year contract after a single campaign with Wasps, where he made one appearance in the Heineken Champions Cup.

He had also moved to the Gallagher Premiership team after one term with Scarlets, where he again played once in the Heineken Champions Cup.

His previous experience was all in South Africa – for Eastern Province Elephants, Southern Kings, Pumas, and Golden Lions.

Uzair Cassiem

Cassiem was with Scholtz at Scarlets, 2020-21 being his final campaign with the Welsh side in a three-season stint in which he made 10 appearances in EPCR competitions.

The 32-year-old flanker or No.8, who joined Bayonne in 2021, had played for Golden Lions, Falcons, Pumas, Toyota Cheetahs and Free State Cheetahs before leaving South Africa.

He won eight caps for the Springboks between 2016 and 2017.
