Ahead of the 2022/23 EPCR Challenge Cup season, we’re looking at some of the current records for the competition. Next up are the leading attendances for the finals.

51,431 (Marseille, 2022)

A new Challenge Cup final attendance record was set only this May as Lyon won the first European title in their history by overpowering TOP 14 rivals RC Toulon 30-12 at the Stade Vélodrome.

48,990 (Marseille, 2010)

The same stadium had already held the record for 12 years and Toulon had also been on the losing side then as they were edged out 28-21 by Cardiff Blues, who became the first Welsh team to win a European trophy.

32,543 (Bilbao, 2018)

EPCR’s first visit to Spain for the Challenge Cup showpiece was rewarded with an excellent crowd at the San Mamés Stadium, who witnessed a pulsating match between Cardiff Blues and Gloucester Rugby, with the Welsh side claiming a 31-30 win thanks to Gareth Anscombe’s last-minute penalty.

31,986 (Lyon, 1999)

Only the third Challenge Cup final set the standard which took 11 years to beat as Montferrand defeated Bourgoin 35-16 at Matmut Stadium de Gerland.
