With the pool draw for the 2022/23 EPCR Challenge Cup completed, we’re looking back at the previous European meetings between opposing sides. Next up, we take a look at the clashes between Scarlets and Aviron Bayonnais in 2019/20 competition as the sides prepare to face each other in Pool B next season.

2019/20 pool stage: Aviron Bayonnais 11 Scarlets 19

Scarlets edged out Bayonne in a tight Round 3 encounter at Stade Jean-Dauger, boosting the Welsh region’s qualification hopes as they handed their TOP 14 opponents a third successive defeat in Pool 2.

Wales and Lions full-back Leigh Halfpenny kicked Scarlets ahead with the first of four penalties and also converted Rob Evans’ try.

Bayonne’s Romain Barthelemy kicked a penalty in either half, while Michael Ruru scored their only try, but their hopes of a late rally were hindered by Yan Lestrade’s yellow card.

Leigh Halfpenny scored 21 points as Scarlets outplayed Bayonne in the return fixture at Parc y Scarlets, which ultimately helped them finish second in Pool 2 and earn a place in the quarter-finals.

Halfpenny ran in Scarlets’ final try as well as kicking five conversions and two penalties. Replacement Kieran Hardy bagged a try double, while Ryan Conbeer, Ryan Elias and Angus O’Brien also crossed.

Julien Tisseron grabbed a consolation try for the visitors in the closing seconds.
