In Bath and Toulon’s first meeting in EPCR competitions, the French side prevailed, with Frederic Michalak coming off the bench to kick a decisive 75th minute penalty at Stade Félix Mayol.

The sides were level heading into the closing stages after Eric Escande had kicked three penalties for Toulon and George Ford had notched two drop-goals and a penalty for Bath.

But Michalak, who had come on early in the second-half, stepped up to slot from the tee and hand reigning champions Toulon a win in their opening Pool 5 game.

It was a similarly tight affair in the reverse fixture at The Recreation Ground, but it was the same outcome as Toulon booked a quarter-final spot.

Two James O’Connor penalties put the visitors six points up by 11 minutes, and moments after George Ford had notched Bath’s first points with a place-kick of his own, Steffon Armitage powered over to extend Toulon’s lead.

Ford slotted another penalty moments later and he nailed another after Anthony Watson had given Bath the lead with a try on 45 minutes.

But Bryan Habana’s effort swung the score-line back in Toulon’s favour and O’Connor wrapped up their win with his third penalty of the game in the closing minutes.

Bath were edged out again two years later as Anthony Belleau’s late try handed Toulon victory in Round 3.

The two sides came into the game following back-to-back wins in the opening two rounds, and it was two tries apiece heading into the final five minutes after Anthony Watson and Jonathan Joseph had gone over for Bath and Ma'a Nonu and Alby Mathewson had crossed for Toulon.

Visitors Bath held a slender lead thanks to 10 points from the boot of Rhys Priestland, but Belleau grubbered through and gathered to score a sensational try on 75 minutes, putting Toulon in control of Pool 5.

Bath finally got one over on Toulon the following round as a try double from Anthony Watson helped them to an important win at The Recreation Ground.

Beno Obano crashed over for the hosts in the opening minute, but Alby Mathewson responded for Toulon midway through the first half.

However, Watson grabbed his double in a 13-minute period before the break, the second proving decisive as Toulon could only find one more score, through Samu Manoa, and Rhys Priestland matched Francois Trinh-Duc's 11-point haul from the tee.
