Our review of the 2021/22 EPCR Challenge Cup campaign continues as we take a look at the all-French final where Lyon secured their first ever European trophy by beating RC Toulon 30-12 at Stade Vélodrome.

Superb Lyon see off Toulon

In front of a record Challenge Cup crowd – 51,431 – Lyon outclassed their TOP 14 rivals and took the lead seven minutes into the game when Baptiste Couilloud gathered a loose ball to dive over.

Toulon replied through Baptiste Serin’s try, but a Pierre-Louis Barassi score, in addition to a penalty try, and 10 points from the boot of Leo Berdeu saw Lyon take an unassailable lead in Marseille.

Cheslin Kolbe dotted down late on for Toulon, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation as they suffered a fourth defeat in the final of the competition.
