London Irish, through to the knockout stage of the EPCR Challenge Cup for the second successive season, have strengthened their bid to win their first European trophy with the signing of South African hooker Alandré van Rooyen for the rest of the season.

The 25-year-old has played in three different competitions for three different South African teams – the Provincial Cup with Blue Bulls, the PRO14 with Southern Kings and the Currie Cup with Griquas.

“Alandré provides more competition for places at hooker and we are happy that he has agreed to join the club,” Declan Kidney, Irish director of rugby, told the Gallagher Premiership club’s website.

“He has good experience across several competitions and we look forward to seeing what he can do in a London Irish jersey.”
