Our latest coach to come under the spotlight is Xavier Garbajosa, who has recently taken the head coach role at Montpellier, signing a contract until 2023. As a result, Vern Cotter has moved up into a director of rugby position.
Where is he from?
Garbajosa joins Montpellier from Challenge Cup finalists La Rochelle. He was backs coach at Stade Marcel Deflandre for four seasons before taking up the role of head coach for the 2018/19 campaign.
What is his previous coaching experience?
The 42-year-old played at Toulouse for 13 seasons, winning the European Cup in 2003 in a trophy-laden career that also included two Grand Slams with France, for whom he won 32 caps.
He moved to Bayonne for a season in 2007, before a knee injury ended his playing career and he returned to Toulouse as a youth coach. He moved to La Rochelle in 2014.
Who will be in his coaching team?
Pierre-Philippe Lafond has also switched to Montpellier, having previously played with Garbajosa at Bayonne. The ex-US Montauban head coach will be scrum coach and joins ex-Scotland lock Nathan Hines (forwards), Richie Gray (skills) and Ian Vass (defence) on the Montpellier coaching team.
What does he think of his appointment?
“I know we have a great base at Montpellier with great staff and quality in every position. We will take time to build and consolidate, but it attracted me because the project is very exciting. Nothing will be easy, but I think this challenge matches my values in the game.”
