After back-to-back Gallagher Premiership defeats, Harlequins co-captain James Horwill is thrilled to be returning to European Rugby Challenge Cup action next Saturday in the London club’s semi-final at ASM Clermont Auvergne.

Three-time Challenge Cup winners Quins will be bidding for their fifth final in the competition, after edging out Worcester Warriors 18-16 at Sixways Stadium in the quarter-finals last month.

“It’s exciting,” lock Horwill told Quins TV. “Obviously, Clermont is a great place to play, a very proud rugby territory. We’re looking forward to going into the stadium there and putting in a performance that Quins can be proud of. That’s what we’re going to aim to do.

“It’s a different competition with a chance to win some silverware. We’re one game away from playing in a game where there’s a trophy at the end of it. That’s what we’ve got to focus on and what our belief is.”

The 62-cap Australia forward added that Quins would be “dusting” themselves down after losing 20-19 at home to Northampton Saints at the weekend and “taking stock” in readiness for what he described as “a huge game against Clermont” next weekend.

Clermont were also beaten narrowly in their domestic competition at the weekend, going down 47-44 at Heineken Champions Cup semi-finalists Toulouse on Sunday in an incredible TOP 14 match between the top two clubs that featured five tries apiece, including a hat-trick from Clermont’s France back, Damian Penaud.
