Edinburgh Rugby head coach Richard Cockerill believes his side “need to win” their Heineken Champions Cup Pool 5 game against leaders Newcastle Falcons on Friday at BT Murrayfield.
The English club are two points ahead of Edinburgh, who host Newcastle on Friday night, with the reverse fixture on December 16 at Kingston Park.
The former Leicester Tigers head coach – who reached the European Cup final with the Midlands outfit in 2009 – reckons the Scottish team require a home victory over the Falcons to give themselves a chance of qualification for the quarter-finals.
“We need to win,” Cockerill told Edinburgh’s website. “If you’re going to qualify out of the group, then you’re going to need to win three of the last four games – at least – to give yourself an opportunity.
“Newcastle at home has to be a game that we target to win – and probably the away game as well. I’m sure they’ll be thinking the same.
“So, if we can win the next two games and move on to 14 points heading into the last two games, you’ll probably need four or five points from there to be second in your group potentially. So, we still have an opportunity to qualify.”
