The 26-year-old knows Dragons still have it all to do to qualify for their first quarter-final in the competition since 2015/16, with only five points between them and third-placed Worcester Warriors, and two rounds of the pool stage to go.

“It was a good night at the office for us,” Davies told the Dragons’ website after their 25-16 home win over Worcester last Friday.

“We spoke about bounce back from the previous week [when they lost 34-28 at Sixways Stadium] and we did that.

“It was important to get that right on Friday. Worcester came back and went ahead in the second half, but we just had to remain composed. We did that and that enabled us to then take it at the end.

“We knew that getting the win would put us in a good position in the competition, but we won’t get ahead of ourselves and will stay focused.”

Davies was Dragons’ match-winner in Round 4 with 20 points, which earned him the man-of-the-match award, and he now has 44 points from his three Challenge Cup appearances this season following his summer move from Ospreys.

“I am enjoying the responsibility and working with [director of rugby] Dean [Ryan],” added the half-back, whose six penalties on Friday were a Challenge Cup match record for Dragons. “We seem to get the best out of each other.

“Sometimes the kicks just seem to all go over; it was one of those nights for me. You put the hours in and it paid off on Friday.”

Ryan returned the compliment by praising the displays of Davies and his half-back partner, Rhodri Williams, after they controlled the game in wet and windy weather.

“They are getting better and better,” said the Dragons boss. “That comes from experiences. No game is the same as another and we’ve had some tough ones.

“They are getting to a night like Friday, where they knew what to do in those circumstances, so I am incredibly proud of everybody and it was nice to hear a bit of Rodney Parade noise.”

Dragons fly-half Sam Davies has pledged that the Welsh region “won’t get ahead” of themselves, despite pulling two points clear at the top of Pool 1 after Round 4 in the European Rugby Challenge Cup.
