With the pool draw for the 2022/23 EPCR Challenge Cup completed, we’re looking back at the previous European meetings between opposing sides. Today, we look back at the 1997 Heineken Cup semi-final between CA Brive and Cardiff Rugby, who will clash in Pool A next season.

1997 Heineken Cup semi-finals: CA Brive 26 Cardiff Blues 13

Brive reached the 1997 Heineken Cup final after coming out on top of an intense contest with Cardiff at a raucous Stadium Municipal.

The French side held a slender lead at the break thanks to three penalties from Christophe Lamaison, with a reply from Jonathan Davies keeping Cardiff within striking distance.

However, the visitors saw Wales captain Jonathan Humphreys sent off for a second yellow card on 64 minutes following a string of infringements, ultimately opening the floodgates for a Brive blitz.

David Venditti scythed through Cardiff’s defence to score a sublime try, and although Davies reduced the deficit briefly with his second penalty, the hosts crossed again through Francois Duboisset.

Lamaison converted both scores and added a fourth penalty to take his match tally to 16 points, with a late penalty try for Cardiff proving insignificant as eventual champions Brive set up a final against Leicester Tigers at Cardiff Arms Park.
