With next season’s Heineken Champions Cup including three South African clubs, we’re going to take you through each squad, picking out some of the players who could star in the competition. To kick things off, we look at the key men in the Bulls pack, who will be taking on Lyon and Exeter Chiefs in Pool A.

Marcell Coetzee

The dynamic flanker is Bulls’ captain and was the leading try scorer in the United Rugby Championship (URC) last season, running in 11 tries in 21 games as he guided his team to the final.

Coetzee was also the leading player when it came to offloads (41) and was fourth in carries (215). Defensively, he is also a big presence, making the second most tackles (210).

The 31-year-old, 30-time South Africa international will certainly be one to watch in next season’s Heineken Champions Cup.

Elrigh Louw

The No.8, who made his South Africa debut against Wales earlier this month, is a willing runner for Bulls, racking up 218 carries in last season’s URC, the third most of any player in the competition.

The 22-year-old featured in all but one of his side’s 21 games in the URC, and he will be hoping to remain a regular in the Heineken Champions Cup.

Ruan Nortjé

The 23-year-old lock is another young player with a burgeoning reputation, starting 20 of Bulls’ 21 games in the URC last season.

Across those matches, Nortjé made 203 tackles, the fourth highest tally in the competition, and he was towering figure in the lineout too, stealing 10, the second most of any player.

Johan Grobbelaar

The hooker featured 17 times in the URC last season, crossing for nine tries to put himself among the leading scorers in the competition.

The 24-year-old is reliable at lineout time, finding his man on 185 occasions – no other player managed more successful throws.

Simphiwe Matanzima

Another front rower to keep an eye on in the Heineken Champions Cup, the prop was a regular off the bench in the URC, tallying 16 substitute appearances as well as three starts.

In addition to grabbing two tries, the 24-year-old achieved a staggering tackle success rate of 99%, completing 68 and missing just one.
