RC Toulon lock Eben Etzebeth is anticipating a tense affair in tonight’s EPCR Challenge Cup final against Lyon.

The South African, who will be aiming to guide Toulon to a first Challenge Cup title in their fourth appearance in the competition’s showpiece game, believes a single kick could decide the contest.

Etzebeth called on his team put their TOP 14 play-off hopes to one side and do the basics well in order to see off their domestic rivals.

“We’re not thinking about that yet,” he asserted. “We obviously have a final and before that we played a quarter-final and semi-final, so [it has been] almost finals week for the last 10, 12 weeks every weekend.

“I don’t think we want to change too much tomorrow. I think we just want to focus on the basics, do the basics well, scrumming, lineouts, mauling. Obviously, a good kicking game.

“It’s going to be a great match-up, it’s going to be a good contest and it’s going to be finals rugby. I think it might be won in the last minute by a drop-goal or penalty.

“Hopefully we’ll be on the winning side. We are well prepared, and I think the guys are really excited for tomorrow.”

Etzebeth has settled into the Toulon second row during the latter part of their EPCR Challenge Cup campaign, starting all three of their knockout stage games, and he says the team’s playing style allows him to slot in with ease.

“That’s why I like the way Toulon play,” he said. “It’s a bit like [how] we play back home. Big forward pack, like the scrum, like the maul.

“There’s a lot of similarities. Obviously good work rate off the ball. It’s great to be in a pack like that – it’s nice to play in a dominant pack.

“We obviously know that Lyon also have a big pack. It’s going to be like a test match between the two [sets of] forwards.”
