ASM Clermont Auvergne 37 Wasps 27

A try deep into injury time saw Wasps denied a bonus point as Clermont beat the defending champions 37-27.

Clermont took a 3-0 lead at the Stade Marcel-Michelin via the boot of Brock James but Danny Cipriani replied soon after to level the scores.

The first try came after 20 minutes with Clermont exploiting the overlap from the base of the scrum to put winger Julien Malzieu over on the right and give the home side a 13-3 lead.

Wasps' reply came in the 32nd minute as James Haskell showed his pace and power to blast though the middle for a nice score under the posts.

Mario Ledesma crossed in the right corner just before the break but the ball looked to have been held up by Haskell. After an agonising wait, the TMO awarded the try leaving Wasps trailing by 10 at the break.

Within minutes of the restart, Wasps were back in it as prop Tim Payne crossed for a converted try and when Haskell was bundled over soon after, the visitors were in front.

However, a trio of James penalties followed by an added time try from Aurelien Rougerie meant the French side took all the points and denied the defending champions a losing bonus point.

The following weekend, it was Wasps who edged out their French rivals in a thriller at Adams Park.

The home side dominated the first half and led by the inspired Danny Cipriani, went 22-0 ahead with tries from Eoin Reddan, Tom Voyce and Paul Sackey.

It was Pierre Mignoni who lost possession for the opener, allowing Reddan to kick the loose ball forward before collecting it and touching down.

Wasps then added a second through Voyce when he finished off in the corner from Lewsey's pass following a fine move.

Cipriani made the score 15-0 after just 18 minutes with a penalty before delivering a superb inside pass to Sackey for a stunning third try.

Clermont regrouped in the second period and long-range tries from Aurelien Rougerie and Vilimoni Delasau set up a dramatic finale.

A late Cipriani penalty sealed victory but Emmanuel Etien's score in injury time gave Clermont a priceless bonus point.
