Matt Giteau: 2013, 2014 and 2015

Giteau has been Australia’s most successful export to European rugby, lifting the European Cup on three occasions, all for RC Toulon.

The 103-Test back played in all nine of Toulon’s games in their victorious 2012/13 and 2013/14 campaigns, scoring 30 of his 42 European points in the latter season, including a try in their 23-6 final win over Saracens.

The 38-year-old centre or fly-half finished with 31 European appearances from his six seasons in the European Cup and Challenge Cup.

Drew Mitchell: 2014 and 2015

Mitchell was another Wallaby star when Toulon dominated the European Cup, although he only featured in two of the campaigns.

The wing, who amassed 34 tries in 71 Tests for the Wallabies, also displayed his lethal finishing for Toulon in the 2015 final, when he scored one of their two tries in their 24-18 victory over ASM Clermont Auvergne.

The 36-year-old flyer ended up with four tries from 18 European Cup games for the French club in four seasons.

Scott Fardy: 2018

The 36-year-old is still with Leinster Rugby, for whom he featured in the Irish province’s back row in their 15-12 triumph over Racing 92 in Bilbao in 2018.

Fardy, who won 39 caps for the Wallabies, has played 20 times in the Heineken Champions Cup for the Irish province.

Rocky Elsom and Chris Whitaker: 2009

Like Giteau and Mitchell, Elsom and Whitaker were team-mates in a European Cup-winning side, although this one was Leinster, who defeated Leicester Tigers 19-16 in the 2009 final at BT Murrayfield, with Elsom at flanker and Whitaker at scrum-half.

The 75-Test Elsom was an ever-present for the Irish province in what was his only season of European rugby, while Whitaker, who won 31 caps for Australia, also played in every game of that successful 2008/09 season for Leinster, as well as in seven European Cup games in the previous two campaigns.

Pat Howard: 2001

Howard, now 47, was the first Australian to collect a European Cup winners’ medal, helping Leicester Tigers to the first of their successive titles in 2001, when he was one of their centres in the English club’s thrilling 34-30 final triumph against Stade Français Paris in the French capital.

The 20-cap back played 14 European Cup games for the Tigers, scoring two tries, before spending a season with Montferrand in the Challenge Cup in 2003/04.
