RC Toulon 16 ASM Clermont Auvergne 15

A combination of Jonny Wilkinson’s goalkicking and some courageous defence earned Toulon their first European Cup and their first major trophy for 21 years, after Clermont dominated possession and territory in a nail-biting final at the Aviva Stadium.

Fly-half Wilkinson kicked three penalties and converted Toulon’s only try – from full-back Delon Armitage – to see off Clermont, whose points came from tries by wing Napolioni Nalaga and fly-half Brock James, plus five points from the boot of scrum-half Morgan Parra.

Such drama had looked unlikely after a dire first half, which finished 3-3 after a penalty apiece from Wilkinson and Parra.

However, the final burst into life within a minute of the restart when Clermont captain Aurelien Rougerie sent Nalaga racing down the left wing after a turnover and the Fijian dived over in the corner for an unconverted try.

Wilkinson reduced the arrears with a 45th minute penalty, but Clermont pulled 15-6 clear when James chipped ahead for Rougerie and the centre passed back inside to the fly-half, who raced clear to score underneath the posts, giving Parra an easy conversion.

However, Wilkinson again cut Clermont’s lead with a 25-metre penalty, before Juan Martin Fernandez Lobbe stole the ball at the breakdown and lofted a pass to Armitage, who scored a breakaway try in the corner on the hour.

Wilkinson landed a superb conversion to put Toulon in front for the first time in the match and came to their rescue again in the 78th minute by charging down David Skrela's drop-goal attempt.
