Friday night’s crowd of 28,438 for the European Rugby Challenge Cup Final between ASM Clermont Auvergne and La Rochelle at Newcastle’s St James’ Park saw two attendance records broken for the competition.

It was the best attendance for a Challenge Cup Final in the United Kingdom (beating BT Murrayfield for Gloucester Rugby v Stade Français Paris in 2016-17) and it meant 2018-19 was a record season for Challenge Cup crowds, with an average of 7,614 per match. The previous best was 7,260 in 2016-17.

The fifth highest Challenge Cup Final crowd in tournament history also boosted the aggregate attendance for the season to 510,160 over the 67 matches.
