NEC Harlequins announced that new signing Paul Volley will take over the captaincy of the team from Andre Vos when the club returns to contest the European Challenge Cup next season.

The 34 year-old back row forward joined Quins on a two-year contract earlier this summer from French club side Castres Olympique.

Prior to joining Castres, Volley spent 16 years with London Wasps and was part of the side that won the Heineken Cup in 2004. Volley’s has earned 27 caps in the Heineken Cup and 8 caps in the European Challenge Cup.

“My short-term objectives are to earn the respect of my team-mates and the Quins supporters, while over the next two years I am confident the squad can achieve the goals we have set for ourselves; namely to qualify for the Heineken Cup and to reach a number of cup finals”, said Volley.

“Some may find it strange to select a player who has only recently joined the squad to take over as captain,” said Dean Richards, NEC Harlequins Director of Rugby. “However, Paul has captained sides before in his career and has tremendous experience, particularly of the club game in England. I have no doubt that he’ll lead by example both on and off the pitch, and be an inspiration to others within the team.”
