The ERC Board of Directors today (Saturday 21 January) ruled on the postponed Round 6 European Challenge Cup Pool 1 match between Viadana and Northampton Saints, which was due to be played on Friday, 20 January, 2006.

The fixture was postponed on Friday evening as the pitch was deemed unplayable and was again postponed this morning following another pitch inspection when it was again deemed unplayable.

Viadana chose to forfeit the game rather than travel to an alternative venue in Livorno, Italy, for a rescheduled match.

As per ERC regulations the fixture was therefore referred to the ERC Board of Directors.

The ERC Board found that as Viadana had chosen to forfeit the match and that as Northampton Saints had remained available to fulfil the fixture and had missed the opportunity to win the match and secure a bonus point, Northampton Saints should be awarded the fixture and five match points and four tries (20 points).

The decision by the Board to award Northampton Saints five match points and four tries was done in order to ensure fairness. The decision of the ERC Board is final and binding.

A decision on whether misconduct complaints should arise from this fixture will be made by the ERC Board of Directors next week.
