From the opening weekend early in October 2005 all the way through to the final in Cardiff in May 2006, Dewi will choose his Try, Players, Team, and Moment of the week.
TRY OF THE WEEK
Gareth Thomas – TOULOUSE V Wasps
This could be the try of the tournament. It was simply outstanding and showed the way rugby should be played with amazing pace, skill and vision. It was a pity they couldn’t build on it, but all credit to the Wasps defence.
TEAM OF THE WEEK
LEICESTER v Stade Francais
Simple as that. they were looking down the barrel and turned it all around in a 12 minute blitz. That Dean Richards old school never-say-die attitude has rubbed off on Martin Corry and co, and Corry was certainly lost for words at the press conference. Stade come to play and picked a great side but at the end of the day they were not good enough. Dan Hipkiss was superb and he is certainly one for the future.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
TREVOR HALSTEAD – MUNSTER v Castres
Munster played well in the midfield and it was all down to Halstead. He was exceptional strong and took control which allowed Ronan O’Gara and Peter Stringer to pull the strings (excuse the pun). Halstead combined well with Barry Murphy, who also played well, and if they carry on playing like that Sale are in for one hell of a battle.
MOMENT OF THE WEEK
Paul O’Connell’s first try: MUNSTER v Castres
Paul O’Connell’s first try. He is the talisman of the Munster side and they certainly play better with him than without him. he has played a few celtic league games, but this was his first heineken Cup game in awhile although you would never have known it. His all round performance was superb and he fully deserved his two tries. It is a credit to him him for performing like he did after a serious injury.
